Ontology-based systems have been developed to structure content and support knowledge retrieval and management. Semantic multimedia data processing and indexing in ontology- based systems is usually done in several steps. One starts by enriching multimedia metadata with additional semantic information (possibly obtained by methods for bridging the semantic gap). Then, in order to structure data, a localized and domain specific ontology becomes necessary since the data has to be interpreted domain-specifically. The annotations are stored in an ontology management system where they are kept for further processing. In this scope, Semantic Database Technologies are now applied to ensure reliable and secure access, efficient search, and effective storage and distribution for both multimedia metadata and data. Their services can be used to adapt multimedia to a given context based on multimedia metadata or even ontology information. Services automate cumbersome multimedia processing steps and enable ubiquitous intelligent adaptation. Both, database and automation support facilitate the ubiquitous use of multimedia in advanced applications. Topics of interest are how multimedia metadata standards and multimedia ontologies are mapped or integrated into databases, how multimedia query languages are built, and how semantic queries are optimized and processed. Moreover, we are interested how multimedia data services are conceived to ensure interoperability, how to improve security and reliability of access and storage of multimedia data and metadata. Adaptation of multimedia, semantic enrichment of multimedia and bridging of media breaks are typical examples of advanced multimedia database services.

The 5th International Conference on Information Technology and Applications (ICITA 2008) will be held in Cairns, Australia from 23 to 26 June 2008. The conference is an annual event and is recognized as one of the major series of conferences in Information Technology (IT in short). ICITA continues to retain its tradition of high quality conference and will open up an opportunity for academics and industrial professionals worldwide to exchange their knowledge of the state-of-the-art research and development in information technology and applications, and to establish and extend professional networks. This conference addresses the importance that IT professionals stretch across narrowly defined subject areas and constantly acquire a global technical and social perspective. ICITA 2008 has offered such an opportunity to facilitate cross-disciplinary and social gatherings.

Social software - often connected to older forms of computer mediated communication (CMC) and newer discussion about online communities - can be defined as software that supports activities in digital social networks. The use of new digital media tools such as blogs, wikis, tagging and other communicative or multimedia assets create new challenges for interdisciplinary research in media informatics. What are the effects when media get agency in digital networks? How can we trace and understand collective processes on the internet? What is the role of visualisation? What is the role of social software on change processes in organisations? Are there new models of labour, new processes and new forms of organisations possible? Will users be empowered or will lack of data protection and privacy set free new genies? What is the impact of tools supporting social structures on the emancipation and appropriation? Which are the impacts on design and media? Will they help facilitating new forms of democracy, digital rights, and overcome the digital divide? Or will the hunt for digital reputation lead to cow paths where only cows walk by? The second international symposium on perspectives in media informatics is organized jointly by the two leading collaborative research centres for media Media and cultural communication and Medienumbrüche, the Bonn-Aachen International Center for Information Technology B-IT and the Network of Excellence on technology enhanced professional learning PROLEARN. It brings together researchers and practitioners from media informatics, sociology, ANT, law, media theory, social software, collaborative work and learning, to discuss current trends and emergent issues of sociality in digital networks in a mixture of invited talks and round table events. The event will be accomplished by online activities and practical exercises in social software.
